THE STANIER BOX

I always loved vacations when the kids were home with us. We packed our clothes, sun glasses for everyone, a Stanier box filled with crackers, candy, gum, etc. for the kids to eat and also for Bob and me.
The Stanier Box was something our friends Doris and Bart Ferguson told us about. Before we left on one vacation, Doris came over and brought us a Stanier Box. It was a cigar box with a lid for candy and chewing gum. She said their friends, the Staniers, gave them such a box for vacations when their kids came along. She passed the idea on to me. We still carry it on vacations.
Of course some of the kids favorite toys were included like the kangaroo called Kanga and the red goat called Devi. They never went anywhere without these favored toys. They have them in a special place today displayed for all who visit.
We also never went anywhere without a divider in the back seat so that Liz, the little one, could not aggravate her older sibling. She had a habit of putting her foot over on Renee’s side or walking her fingers on Renee’s side. This made Reneé furious. We always knew what was happening when Reneé cried, “Mom, make Liz stop!” Liz really enjoyed this!
I really miss those days. They are gone now and vacations include just Bob and me. Vacations are different now, but they are still fun. Sometimes they now include another couple and their Stanier box.
Sometimes our vacations are real vacations rather than genealogy vacations.
