THE QUILT

As fall approached, grandmother busied herself with collecting scraps of fabric to make a “Little Dutch Girl” quilt for her newest grandchild who would arrive sometime in November. The colors were many, just in case it was a baby boy. (By the way, had I been a boy the name chosen was Joe Lewis-after the famous boxer of that era.)
Come November after my birth, I was wrapped in that new quilt with the beautiful colors made by the loving hands of my maternal grandmother. Many years later the quilt was used to wrap our children and later our grandchildren.
An heirloom of this importance is unique, especially in this condition. Now the quilt hangs in the guest room of the original recipient, in a beautiful shadow box.
I display it occasionally in the Genealogy Library's glass cases.
