Graduation classes today are much bigger than mine were when I graduated from Plano High School so many years ago. Much bigger! Those were grand times. The parties celebrating our finishing high school were fun, even though a little scary for some. I don’t remember being scared, or even nervous. I was ready for the next big adventure in my life and couldn’t wait to get on with it!
We celebrated proms at the Community Center. It is now a religious building on J Avenue just south from the intersection at 14th Street. I have pictures of me at the prom. My senior year, I wore a yellow evening gown with a full skirt. My date gave me a spray of yellow roses tipped in orange that went from the bodice and curved at the waist and continued within a foot of the hem. That was the prettiest at the prom, I thought. Believe me when I tell you my college graduation was not as grand, but my sense of accomplishment was more rewarding than anything in high school.
After senior graduation we had breakfast at Lucas B&B Restaurant in Dallas. At that time, nothing in Plano was open all night. When I went home, I immediately went to bed and slept until one in the afternoon. I was awakened by a telephone call from Mrs. Skaggs wanting me and the rest of the class at the school for pictures or something. My husband carried my high school graduation picture in that yellow evening gown in his wallet until a couple of years ago when he removed it. Why? I don’t know the answer.
Do you remember your graduation? It was a very special time in your life whether you finished high school or went to college. Share those memories with your family.
